This Friday, July 19, 2019, a new edition of the BBC Proms in London.
BBC Proms It is the largest classical music festival in the world. The festival is organized, as its name indicates, by the BBC, the prestigious British television and radio company.
The festival was founded in 1895 and its purpose was to give the general public access to classical music. More than 100 years later the event has grown considerably but its original philosophy is still intact.
Today the festival lasts 2 months, between July and September, and has in its program more than 80 classical music concerts and hundreds of additional events related to the concerts.
The vast majority of concerts take place at the Royal Albert Hall, which has a capacity of over 5,000 people and is one of the most historic and prestigious concert halls in the world.
The concerts usually play pieces by the most renowned classical music composers, but there is also room for contemporary compositions, jazz and even experimental pieces. Ideal for the most traditional classical music lovers as well as for people who are just beginning to explore the genre, or prefer to experiment.
This year’s program will feature music by Bartok, Beethoven, Berlioz, Bizet, Brahms, Bach, Chopin, Dvorak, Debussy, Duke Ellington, De Falla, Granados, Handel, Haydn, Khachaturian, Liszt, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Offenbach, Palestrina, Puccini, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel, Rossini, Schoenberg, Schumann, Strauss, Schubert, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Wagner, among the most famous composers of classical music, and also music by many other less renowned composers.
Concert ticket prices vary between £7.50 and £105. And if a particular concert sells out, 1,350 tickets go on sale each day for just £6 each. These tickets are for attending the concert standing up and are sold half an hour before the start.
These £6 tickets are very popular and as they only sell 1 per person and their price is very affordable, queues usually form more than 1 hour in advance to get them, so you should bear in mind that you will probably have to queue for 1 hour and then stand for the entire duration of the concert. On the other hand, it is the only way to guarantee tickets to a very good concert (which is already sold out) and to enjoy a world-class event in one of the most spectacular venues on the planet for only £6!
The 2019 BBC Proms will take place at the Royal Albert Hall between Friday 19 July and Saturday 14 September. There are more than 80 classical music concerts scheduled and hundreds of events related to the concerts and the festival in general.
