If you fancy having a nosey round George Michael’s former gaffyou’ve got two options. You could track down the episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show that features him giving an ‘ultra-private’ tour of the gorgeous 16th century property. Or you could go and see it for yourself – and stay the night there, while you’re at it. In the words of the late, great pop icon: I guess it would be nice…

George Michael bought Mill Cottage in the quaint-and-quiet village of Goring-on-Thames back in 2001. He lived there for 15 years before sadly passing away at the cottage on Christmas Day, 2016. After his death, his fans petitioned for the house to be turned into a memorial, but to no avail. In 2020, Mill Cottage was bought for £3.8 million by the current owners – who, at the time, were pretty clueless about quite how important the property was to George Michael fans. Fast forward to 2024, and the luxury pool house attached to the beloved singer’s former pad is now available to rent on Airbnb. For a rather hefty price-tag, might I add.

The pool house is located within the grounds of Mill Cottage, which is sat on the banks of the River Thames in Goring. It sleeps up to four people (with one double bed and one sofa bed) and boasts an open-plan lounge and kitchen, a huge fireplace for cosy winter nights and a swimming pool for those warm (and slightly less warm) summer days.

The property is available to book all year round, but the pool itself is only in use between March 1 and October 1. There’s next to no mention of George Michael on the Airbnb listing, but many guests have commented on how much they loved being shown around the grounds by the hosts and hearing the stories from George’s time there in their glowing reviews.

The property has been a smash hit with fans of the singer, with many five-star reviews on the website. One review reads: “Being long time George Michaels fans we just had to jump at the opportunity. It just felt magical. We felt connected in a small way. Something that usually money can’t buy.” Another said: “As fans of GM it felt very surreal to be staying in the grounds of his house, and I still have to pinch myself that we were actually staying in his former home”.

It costs £550 per night to stay in the Pool House at Mill Cottage, a price than many guests seem to be more than willing to pay, as many dates are already booked up. Each year, Goring village commemorates what would have been George Michael’s birthday with a party in the village hall. Many fans travel from far and wide to celebrate, and so if £550 is a little out of your budget, you could still pop along to his birthday party to celebrate the life and legacy of the pop legend.
