When every European city, from Barcelona to Amsterdam, Venice and Prague, is trying to deter tourists, one Sicilian town is bucking the trend. Located on the largely unspoiled coastline of west Sicily, Siculiana has launched a €1 holiday promotion to encourage visitors to the beach destination.

The three-day weekend experience is open to all couples (18+), and you only have to pay the €1 tourist tax, oh, and the small cost of travelling there. But everything else is free on this “immersive tourist experience”, we promise! You just need to make sure you’re free the weekend of April 4 to 6.

What does this €1 holiday include?

Included in your holiday package are two nights of accommodation; breakfast, lunch and dinner; guided tours among the historical places of Siculiana; a welcome and farewell aperitif at the seaside village of Siculiana Marina; and what are only described as “experiential activities to learn about customs and traditions.”

The catch: It won’t be a total holiday, as the winners will have some work to do while out in Siculiana. You’ll have to participate in a video story/diary of your experiencehighlighting the most significant moments of your stay. This will then be used by Siculiana Turistica for promotional purposes.

How do I apply?

To apply, each couple must make a short video (maximum 30 seconds) in which you explain why you are applying for the €1 holiday. Your reasons can be anything from “it’s free” to “we’re celebrating our wedding anniversary” or “we want to explore the origins of Senna myth”. The more original, creative and enthusiastic the reason and video are, the better!

You haven’t got long, though. The deadline is this Saturday, March 15with the winners announced by March 20. Send your video via WhatsApp to 0922 818 438 and include in your message:

  • Names and surnames of participants and type of relationship (spouses, friends, etc.)
  • Age
  • City of residence
  • Telephone and email contact
