Paramount’s Sonic cinematic universe continues to expand after two big screen blockbusters (2020s Sonic 1 and 2022 Sonic 2). The studio’s latest stab at SEGA’s beloved video game world came with a live-action spin-off series centered around Idris Elba’s Knuckles the Echidna.
Elba’s Knuckles will debut in 2022 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and is supposed to appear in the upcoming third main line Sonic movie; However, his future after that is unknown.

Is there a Knuckles movie coming?
Talk about a Knuckles movie that might come after December Sonic 3 is born after Idris Elba’s Echidna Warrior, which starred in his Paramount+ series.
Although Paramount saw enough interest to give the green light Knuckles spin-off show, it currently seems unlikely that a Knuckles solo film would ever be accepted.
Knuckles has always worked best as a recurring secondary character in Sonic the Hedgehog rather than having stories directly focused on him.
The side stories focus on Knuckles and his deep backstory (i.e. diving into where he came from Sonic X anime), but he plays best as Sonic and Tails and not on his own.
It is fully visible in the reaction Knuckles TV series. The Knuckles the streaming show hasn’t exactly set the world alight, earning middling reviews on a platform that hasn’t managed to capture an audience like Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video.
The series debuted with a measly 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics called it a tonal mess that lacks the heart of the main line. Sonic movies.
If the series had been popular and a big draw for Paramount+, then the idea would have to be explored Knuckles the movie may have been justified. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
Paramount has not announced its plans Sonic outside the franchise Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which is set to open in theaters on December 20th), so there’s always the possibility that more films in the series will be revealed.
But a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 seems more likely than anything Knuckles-centric.
When will fans next see Idris Elba’s Knuckles?
Just because a Knuckles-centric movie remains unlikely doesn’t mean fans are ready for Idris Elba to take on the iconic video game tough guy.
Elba is set to appear alongside other returning cast members such as Ben Schwartz and James Marsden in this year’s film. Sonic The Hedgehog 3.
The Knuckles actor will also be joined by another A-list debut Sonic 3. Keanu Reeves is set to join the film as the iconic Shadow the Hedgehog.
Besides that, the future Sonic the franchise on the big and small screen is still unknown.
Knuckles Season 1 leaves the door open for a possible season 2, but it could also be a simple cover Sonic 3 in December.
Series co-creator Toby Ascher told TV Line shortly after Knuckles Season 1 debuted that they “I would definitely watch more seasons” of the series, only if “There’s a great idea and a great story.”
“There are other ideas in television that we are interested in,” Ascher teased, adding that they are also looking into it “lots of movie ideas” as well:

Knowing that we have this world and these characters that fans care so much about, we focus on finding the best stories and figuring out how to tell them in that world. So while a Knuckles-led solo film seems unlikely, fans will likely get a lot more of Idris Elba’s version of the character in the coming years, both on the big screen and streaming at home.
