A new announcement from Netflix Animation has fans wondering if it’s real Hotel Transylvania 5 is on the way.
The franchise, which follows Dracula’s holiday trip to the monsters, is much bigger than one might realize. To date, it has spawned four different movies and a television show.
Compared to the other books, the fourth film offered an ingenious twist to the story, as all the monsters were stuck living as humans.
Now Netflix is ready to flip the script once again and offer a completely new take – but not in the way expected.
Is Motel Transylvania the same as Hotel Transylvania 5?
Netflix Animation made the announcement to the press on June 6 at a big event with The Direct in attendance. Motel Transylvaniaa new animated series for the platform.
It is important to note how this project is not Hotel Transylvania 5 but instead a spin-off that takes the franchise in a different direction.
It features two key characters familiar to fans, which are Dracula and his daughter Mavis. The story line teases that they will set up a completely different resort for both humans and monsters in the California desert.
The full synopsis can be read below:
“Motel Transylvania is open for business as Drac & Mavis take a break from their Transylvania haunts to start a brand new resort for humans and monsters in the California desert. Vampires and sunshine…what could go wrong!?”
The show currently doesn’t have a release date, but is expected to drop sometime in 2025.
What should fans expect from Motel Transylvania?
One thing to note is that the name of the spin-off specifically uses the term Motel, which doesn’t exactly suggest a luxury experience. So what exactly could be Dracula and Mavis’ goal with this new venture?
At the very least, expanding their brand within the universe could lead to some interesting developments as the franchise continues. Perhaps one day, fans could see a family-friendly satire of wealthy monsters similar to Max’s fan-favorite series, White Lotus.
Of course, this isn’t the first animated project created by the IP. The first aired for 26 episodes on the Disney Channel from 2017 to 2020 and served as a prequel to the events of the original films, following Mavis managing everything while her father was away on business.
Even just the short teases that Netflix has released Motel Transylvania seem to indicate that this project will be a few cuts above the first series, especially when it comes to animation quality.
Casting for the series has yet to be confirmed, but it seems likely that fans should expect more familiar faces to return to the series when it arrives next year.
As for when a Hotel Transylvania 5 releases, fans will have to hope that this animated series does well enough to make that happen.
