It’s officially Heartstopper autumn (is that a thing? We’re making it a thing) as the third season finally dropped on Netflix yesterday (3rd October). We’re back with Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as they navigate their relationship and start to think more about the future. And while we’re so excited to be back with the whole cast, one key cast member was quite obviously missing. So why isn’t Olivia Colman in season three?

Since the show’s first season Olivia has played the role of Nick’s loving mother Sarah. The fan favourite scene in which Nick comes out to his mum as bisexual, and is met with total love and acceptance, is one of the most heartwarming and important scenes from the first two seasons.

But we unfortunately won’t get any more mother and son bonding moments on screen in season three as Olivia was MIA for the entire third season. So why didn’t she return? Here’s what you need to know.

Why wasn’t Olivia Colman in Heartstopper season 3?

Ok, so there’s no big dramatic reason as to why Olivia wasn’t in the third season. Her absence was due to a scheduling conflict.

In an interview with Forbes Olivia revealed she wasn’t able to make her schedule work to fit in Heartstopper and another project.

“I couldn’t do number three. I couldn’t fit it in. I feel awful about that,” she said. “I feel like I was part of one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever been part of.”

As for whether she’d return for a potential fourth season or even spin-off series, Olivia seems to be keen, after being asked by Forbes her feelings about returning.

“Okay! I’ll have a word. As long as it’s booked in advance, maybe I’ll be able to do it, yeah!” she told the publication.

On behalf of all Heartstopper fans it’s essential we get Olivia back on our screens.
