Netflix is new Reindeer baby the series makes viewers wonder how the titular nickname came about.
Reindeer baby gives viewers a comic adaptation of Richard Gadd’s play of the same name, which centers on a comedian who becomes embroiled in a stalking situation after a random act of kindness.
That story was expanded into seven drama episodes, and the thriller series premiered on Netflix on April 11. Viewers were left with questions about what they would see in the coming weeks.
Why does Martha use the nickname “Baby Reindeer”?
Episode 7 of the new Netflix series, Reindeer babyexplaining to fans why Martha uses this nickname for the main character Donny.
In that episode, Martha leaves Donny a voicemail detailing a reindeer toy she had as a child that reminds her of him. He also tells how he used to hug it when his parents were fighting.
By filming “big lips, big eyes and the cutest little fool” with a reindeer he explained how it was “the only good thing about (his) childhood” in voicemail:
“I had this little stuffed toy when I was young. I took it everywhere with me. I think the earliest memory I have is Christmas. This old photo of me sitting with this paper hat on and this reindeer baby next to me. Anyway, this reindeer was this soft, fluffy thing. It was the cutest little thing that i still have to this day And they fought, you know, the same spats You mean so much to me.
How did the nickname Reinvavuva come about?
Reindeer baby (both the show and the play it’s based on) is based on Gadd’s true story, and the nickname is part of that story.
As The Independent explains, Martha (Gadd’s stalker, who was renamed for the sake of the story) used this nickname for Gadd in most of the more than 40,000 emails she sent him over three years.
At the time of writing, Marta’s whereabouts are unknown. Gadd hopes he deals with his issues as a victim in this same story.
As the “Baby Reindeer” moniker has become common among recent streaming releases, the show and its true origin story continue to resonate as victims of similar circumstances find solace in the results.
