Who is “Dman” in Tell Them You Love Me?

Netflix

At several points in Tell them you love meformer Rutgers University Newark professor Anna Stubblefield (who was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of Derrick Johnson) often goes by the name “Dman”.

Dman is the nickname Stubblefield gave Derrick Johnson when he was supposed to be under his care and learning communication skills.

In the documentary, Stubblefield explained how the nickname came about.

Stubblefield argued Tell them you love me that he asked Derrick Johnson what he would do “I want to be invited” when he taught her to communicate by writing and so “he wrote DMAN:”

“I said, ‘You know what, it occurs to me that I never asked you what you liked to be called.’ Your brother told me your name is Derrick, you came in, I have called you Derrick. Tell me why you want me to call you?’ And he wrote DMAN.”

The former professor then said Derrick’s mother Daisy walked in and explained Derrick “this was a really great teacher” earlier in life “who lifted him out of his wheelchair and made him walk” and that he “used to be called (Derrick) Dman:”

“And I looked at it and it didn’t look like any recognized name. Daisy (Johnson) came back into the room at that point and I said, ‘He wrote DMAN, does that mean anything to you?’ She said, ‘Oh, he had this really great teacher when he was 13 , who called him Dman.” It was the teacher who lifted him out of his wheelchair and made him walk.”

Stubblefield then said he asked Derrick if his mother was right, claiming she confirmed, “so (he) called him thence Dman:”

“So I said, ‘Is he right?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ So I called him Dman from there, it was a very important moment to be able to tell people what you want to call is this important emotional side that we take away from people when they can’t talk.

Stubblefield continues to refer to Derrick as Dman throughout Tell them you love mewhich is quite troubling given that Derrick’s mother stated that Derrick would not have been able to communicate through writing without Stubblefield’s manipulation.
