As the oldest seafood restaurant in Brighton and one of the South’s leading independent seafood restaurants & oyster bars, English’s of Brighton offers both classical favourites & modern seafood dishes coupled with friendly yet attentive service.

English’s works closely with their suppliers to make sure that every customer enjoys the freshest oysters, served only when they are in season, locally reared meat, freshly baked bread and the finest selection of wines. Suppliers include family-run businesses like Lindisfarne Oysters and Burt Family Butchers in Bexhill, in addition to Brighton Newhaven Fish Sales who deliver the finest fish and shellfish to English’s daily, caught locally in Shoreham Harbour.

Whether you choose to dine in the recently re-styled dining rooms, at the original marble-topped oyster bar, or on the covered and heated al fresco terrace with views over the bustling square, you can enjoy English’s of Brighton extensive a la carte menu or one of their simpler set-menus with live jazz or opera playing regularly.

English’s offer a unique dining experience, and can accommodate parties of all sizes, from an intimate table for two to a restaurant wedding reception.

English’s of Brighton is unique in that it has been serving seafood on the same site since the 1890s and remains family owned and operated. The Leigh-Jones family have owned English’s since 1945 and on the restaurant’s walls, you’ll find signed photographs of famous guests including Charlie Chaplin, Lily Savage and Judi Dench to name but a few.

Whilst tastes have changed over the years, English’s ethos of quality seafood, warm welcome, attentive service and value for money remains unchanged. The expert staff will make sure you order the right meal for you, with a wine to match perfectly.

English’s offers the finest selection of wines working with the likes of Bancroft Wines, Hennings Wine Merchants, Passione Vino and Roberson Wine.

We started with a recommendation of the Starter Platter which included smoked salmon, fried calamari, shrimp croquette, chicken liver parfait and mussels marinières.

The chicken liver parfait was thick, creamy and when combined with the fresh bread and caramelized red onion made for a moreish combination.

The smoked salmon came with lemon mayo and was rolled into an easy bite-size piece.

The fried calamari had a soft texture but was flavourful and was presented in bite-size pieces. A nice surprise was the shrimp croquette which was a nice combination of shrimp potato, onion and seasoning. Crisp on the outside and packed with flavour on the inside.

We then moved on to the decadent Cold Platter which consisted of steamed & chilled dressed brown crab, tiger prawns, clams & mussels, raw rock oysters & tuna sashimi and smoked salmon accompanied by mignonette, lemon mayonnaise, ponzu, wasabi and lemon.

Come in for a closer look at the steamed & chilled dressed brown crab nestled on sashimi and surrounded by tasty clams and mussels.

On the other side of the platter were succulent tiger prawns and the freshest tasting oysters.

For dessert, we shared the Dark chocolate & hazelnut “fondant” served with raspberries, crème fraiche and mint. A delicious end to a fabulous feast at English’s of Brighton.
