When Chef Jono was announced as a new cast member joining Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea season 9, it looked like the show’s redemption season. Johnathan seemed to bring his cooking skills, twerking skills and singing skills to bear, making him an exciting addition. However, Johnathan’s food was terrible and he didn’t know how to speak to guests professionally.

During Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea season 9, episode 4, Captain Sandy invited Gigi Fernandez, a 17-time grand slam doubles champion, for the ultimate fine dining experience. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as expected, thanks to Johnathan’s culinary ineptitude. Gigi complained about her services and Johnathan did nothing to redeem himself. At one point, the grand slam winner asked Johnathan what the gazpacho appetizer was. The Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea the reality star said she googled it and realized it was some grandmother’s recipe“, which infuriated Captain Sandy.

Despite the criticism of the guest characters, it is likely that Chef Johnathan will return to the game Below decks franchise. Johnathan took to his Instagram account to reminisce about his once-in-a-lifetime experience, sharing a video that captured the moments. In a long text, chef Johnathan thanked the crew and the cast for giving him the best moments of his careeradding that he felt as if he had:

“Lifelong yachting friends in every crew! What a dream team!”

In addition, Johnathan reflected on his growth and compared himself to diamonds that “is formed under pressure.” In the same message Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea the actor teased that it wouldn’t be the last time people see or hear from him on the series. This indicates that Johnathan may return, although it is still unclear if he will Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea or a different series than the franchise.


Chef Johnathan deserves a second chance. A return in a different season would help him showcase his skills well without colleagues and strangers questioning his character and abilities. He seems to have taken all the positives throughout season 9 and is willing to work on them if he’s working on a smaller or bigger project.

Although he could have been classified as one of the worst crew members this season, he is still not as bad as Kyle Viljoen from seasons 7 and 8. Kyle caused chaos and division among the crew members. He befriended some and pretended to be their friends while still talking about taste behind their backs. Maybe on his next appearance Below deck, the Mediterranean Sea or whatever spin-off he joins, Chef Johnathan continues to take lessons from Season 9.
