We test the best supermarket margaritas

125ml, £3.90, Tesco/Sainsbury’s/Morrisons

Made with clear tequila, triple sec and lime, Moth's Margarita is fresh, sharp and punchy. Despite not being the cheapest, this is brilliant, flavour-some booze made by real experts – and it tastes it.

Moth

250ml, £2.50,  M&S & Ocado

Crisp, clean and citrusy, it is made with a double measure of tequila silver so it definitely packs a decent boozy kick. This is your new gin-in-a-tin replacement for that post-work, summer evening, train ride home.

3/5

M&S Margarita Cocktail

250ml, £3.25,  Tesco

This marvellous margarita, which comes from the drinks range owned by singer Ellie Goulding, contains a double measure of tequila. When you slurp, it tastes immensely zesty and refreshing with a great balance of flavour.

Served

250ml, £2.70,  Sainsbury’s

If you're happy with a lighter, more lemony style of margarita with a slight spritz, this is a perky cocktail that is cheap as chips. The mix itself is not particularly authentic, which might mean purists won’t be keen.

2/5

Tribeology

125ml, £3.90,  Tesco

The tinny from Brewdog boasts a higher 14% ABV at an expensive price. Made with Casa Rayos, a premium tequila brand, with a welcome splash of triple sec, lime and salt, there is tons of flavour going on.

3/5

Wonderland

700ml, £8,  Asda

Suspiciously low-priced given it's nearly as big as a bottle of wine – but definitely still drinkable. With Mexican tequila listed as the main alcoholic ingredient, it's heavy on the lime and a little on the simple side.

2/5

Extra Special

750ml, £15,  Sainsbury’s

With this you will get a quality agave liquor and several authentic 15% ABV pours out of it that need nothing doing, bar ice and your preferred garnish. It is much cheaper than the leading can brand as well.
