It's one of the best known brands around the world but has Guinness got any real challengers? We put some canned stout rivals to the test.

Guinness

£14 for 10 440ml cans from Iceland

£1.40 per can

Taste: 10/10 Value: 9/10 Total: 19/20

Even in a can, the original still tastes as good as a freshly poured pint with its recognisable malty sweetness and a hoppy bitterness that we all know and love.

Brewdog Black Heart

£12.50 for 10 440ml cans from Tesco

£1.25 per can

Taste: 5/10 Value: 5/10 Total: 10/20

A decent creamy head and a very subtle, bitter smell. Sadly though, I was a bit disappointed when I tasted it because I found it to be pretty bland. Doesn't hit the mark.

Velvet Stout

£1.50 for one 330ml can from Asda

Taste: 8/10 Value: 8/10 Total: 16/20

Brewed exclusively for Asda, and fairly impressive. A malty, dark chocolate undertone but pours a bit like Coca Cola. Taste made up for that though.

Camden Town Brewery Stout Smooth

£2.50 for one can from Sainsbury's

Taste: 9/10 Value: 5/10 Total: 14/20

Looks and smells the most like Guinness, super smooth with a silky head. More of a bitter taste but enjoyable. A bit pricey.

Irish Stout

£2.20 per 500ml bottle from Marks and Spencer

Taste: 4/10 Value: 4/10 Total: 8/20

A bit of a non-descript, thin taste with  a smokey aftertaste  that wasn't particularly pleasant. Disappointing.

Lancaster Black Stout

£2.25 per 500ml bottle from Asda

Taste: 8/10 Value: 9/10 Total: 17/20

Dark, refreshing and full-bodied with aromas  of coffee and chocolate. Pours beautifully with a silky head.  A little pricey.
