Olympic swimmer and social media sensation Luana Alonso has announced her retirement aged 20 after a defeat at Paris 2024.
The Paraguay star, who has 309,000 followers on Instagram, made the shock announcement on her account after competing in the first heat of the 100m women's butterfly.
Alonso, who attends college in America, finished in sixth as she narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semi-final.
After the race, she posted: “It's official now! I'm retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay, I only have to thank you!”
And she appeared to tell Claro Sports that she had been swimming since she was two years old.
Alonso said: “I have been swimming for so long, 18 years, and I have so many feelings."
She added: “Unfortunately, I made the decision to stop and I am happy that my last race will be at the Olympic Games.”
