Squalor, stains & dodgy electrics - I spent the night in Britain's worst hotel

With its foul smell, stained bed sheets and dead insects on the walls, guests have described Minster Garth hotel as like something from a horror film.

Foul-mouthed owner John Dixon was recently in court after falsely claiming the rundown Georgian lodgings in the market town of Beverley, near Hull, was a four-star guest house.

The Sun's Josh Saunders, who spent the night there, felt queasy when he spotted several white marks on the bed's blue quilt.

Shower gel was kindly provided (or left behind), but the owners seemed to have forgotten to clean. A black ring of dirt ran along the inside of the toilet.

Apart from what was in the vending machine, there was nothing to eat. Josh paid £1.50 for chicken-flavoured instant noodles which turned out to be five months out of date.

More quirks became clear in the shabby room, which cost just under £45 a night, including a dodgy-looking electrical socket by the bed.

The Minster Garth hotel has an average rating of one and a half stars on TripAdvisor with locals describing it as "appalling".
