My photos were stolen and used to catfish men – a scammer made thousands and then sent a stranger to my house for a date

A woman has revealed how she fell victim to a catfish trap after her details were stolen and traded for cash.

Stephanie Matto, 33, even had a stranger turn up at her home at 11pm one night convinced he was meeting her for a date.

After she hid and called cops, the truth emerged. The man had been sending the catfish thousands of pounds and thought she had agreed to go to a hotel.

He had been talking to someone on Facebook pretending to be Matto, down to posting her pictures and copying her social media captions.

Stunned, Matto, from Connecticut, clicked over to Facebook and found "so many fake profiles" with her name and photos.

She said: "Seeing the sheer amount of catfish accounts for me was so scary. The fakes were super convincing."

Catfishing is when crooks and creeps steal personal information, usually from social media, and then use it to lure unsuspecting people into virtual romances - often also scamming them for cash.
