I tried supermarkets’ BBQ sauces – the winner is cheap as chips and has a spicy kick

BBQ season is firmly upon us and no sizzler is complete without the right sauce to slather over burgers, sausages and chicken. We decided to give them all a go.

Quite thick and sweet, with a deep colour and a lovely smoky flavour. Tasted like one of the higher end products but a fraction of the price.

Very thick, delicious and more-ish. Lovely as a condiment but also as a marinade during BBQ season, although pricier than supermarket rivals.

Stokes BBQ Sauce (315g)

Quite runny and tasted too sweet. Not my favourite overall.

Tesco Fire Pit Kansas Style BBQ Sauce (300g)

£1.50 Taste:  6/10 Value:  5/10

Undeniably delicious, but not cheap. Full-bodied and rich, made with tomato puree and smoky flavouring. Loved it.

Bull's-Eye Original BBQ Sauce (355g)

£2 Taste:  10/10 Value:  7/10

Cheap as chips, but very tasty too, with a rich, caramel taste and a spicy kick. Overall this was my winner.

Lidl Batts Classic Barbecue Sauce (500ml)

89p Taste:  10/10 Value:  10/10

Good price, but it's neither sweet or smoky enough and the tomato flavour was slightly off. The recipe needs a rethink.
