I tested supermarket versions of Jelly Babies against brand leader Maynards and the winner was 20p cheaper

Nostalgic sweets like Jelly Babies are back on trend, but how do supermarket brands compare to Bassetts? The Sun's Laura Stott tried a selection and marked them out of five.

165g, £1.50 (91p per 100g)

Maynards Bassetts

Chunky, squashy, and very satisfying. Juicy, tasty morsels but more rubbery than I remembered.

250g, £1.10 (44p per 100g)

Tesco

Almost mushy but the taste is a bit diluted. A pity, considering the great price and size.

Asda

You'll still get a decent sugar hit but these are slightly bland. The price is sweet enough, though.

Marks & Spencer

Very satisfying, almost gooey, to eat, especially enjoyable if your preferred method is to nibble.

175g, £1.25 (71p per 100g)

Haribo

Firm and flatter, more like a child-shaped chew, but really fruity with a strong aroma.

Morrisons

Different in texture and taste but as someone without a particularly sweet tooth, I really enjoyed them.
