I compared supermarket oven chips to top-seller McCain’s...

...winner was half the price and as good as the local chip shop

The nation loves a chippy tea but they are set to rocket in price on the back of poor potato harvests. The Sun's Thea Jacobs tested oven-cooked alternatives.

McCain Home Cut Straight

Tesco £3.20 (1kg)

These are crisp and fluffy, though they look less yummy than I’d expect. Tasty, but I can’t justify the price.

Ridiculously Crispy Straight Cut

Iceland £2.75 (1.44kg)

Crunchy on the outside, light and fluffy inside. A great bag of chips – but a little on the expensive side.

4

Homestyle Straight Cut

Tesco £2.20 (950g)

Much stodgier inside than McCain’s, but they would be great for dipping in gravy. Not bad, but not the best.

4

Sainsbury’s Crinkle Cut

Sainsbury's £1.99, (1.5kg)

Somewhere between smooth and fluffy on the inside, which isn’t what I want in a chip. Best left on the shelf.

Asda Just Essentials

Asda £1.62 (1.5kg)

These look burnt but don’t taste fully cooked. No crunch and a bit slimy inside. Cheap, but I just wouldn’t waste the cash.

2

Aldi Straight Cut

Aldi £1.65 (1.5kg)

Thicker than many of the others, and crispy but super-light inside, they are almost as good as my local chippy. Great value.
