Looks
Getting into a Golf is like putting on your favourite pair of shoes it’s not high fashion, but it feels familiar, looks good and fits well. This seventh generation model sticks to the formula that works understated, slightly conservative looks, backed up by superb build quality and a considered, highquality interior, made to stand whatever family life can throw at it. It’s just a shame the colour range isn’t more imaginative.

Practicality

Both three and fivedoor models are spacious – three adults fit comfortably in the back. The boot is a good size, you can change its height to suit your load and the rear seats fold flat. Well thoughtout touches like a cooled and lockable glovebox and Bluetooth feature on even the most basic S model.

Driving
Reassuring is the word to use here. VW has spent 40 years developing the Golf and it shows. It’s engines are quiet, the precise steering and good visibility make parking easy and you’ll travel in comfort thanks to its smooth ride. There’s an engine in the range to suit everyone and you can choose either a manual or automatic gearbox with most of them.

Safety
The Golf has a full fivestar rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests, scoring highly for both adult and child protection. Even the basic S model gets a clever braking system that automatically slows the car after an accident to help prevent a secondary impact, along with headrests designed to help prevent whiplash.

Running costs
Efficient engines all include technology to cut the engine when you’re sitting in traffic. The BlueMotion diesel engine offers the best economy – Volkswagen claims up to 88mpg – and it’s free to tax. The Golf is a premium product, which is reflected in the price, but it will hold its value well and overall cost of ownership is low.

GH verdict
This isn’t the most stylish family hatchback, but we think it offers a superb all round package that’s hard to beat.
