Rose Theatre has announced Three Men in a Boata new stage adaptation by Al Smith based on Jerome K. Jerome’s much‑loved novel.
The production will be directed by Christopher Haydon, returning to the venue following his recent successes including Emma in 2025.
Three Men in a Boat will run at Rose Theatre from Friday 18 September to Saturday 10 October 2026, with a press performance on Wednesday 23 September.
 
 
 
 
Christopher Haydon, Artistic Director of Rose Theatre, said: “When I first read Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat I couldn’t believe how laugh out loud funny it was – despite being over 130 years old. The fact that the story begins in Kingston made it feel like a complete no-brainer for us to do at the Rose. I knew immediately that Al Smith was the right person to adapt – he brings a mix of wit and charm that is a perfect match for Jerome’s own style. I can’t wait to share this joyful, funny and moving story with our audience.”
The story follows friends Jerome, George and Harris as they embark on a seemingly carefree boating trip up the Thames, only to be met with torrential rain, unruly dogs and some very angry swans.
Physical comedy will be created by John Nicholson, known for Tweedy’s Massive Circusadding to the playful spirit of this world premiere.
Tickets are currently on presale for Rose Members, with general booking opening on Wednesday 25 February at 12pm via the Rose Theatre website.
