I’m Not Okay exhibition at The Barbican Library

Running now at the Barbican Library, I’m Not Okay is the ultimate love letter to the emo and youth culture from the early noughties. Boasting a mix of posters, memorabilia, vinyls, and rare photographs on display – including some throwback mirror selfies using the staple Y2K digital camera, and featuring the iconic side-swept fringe to boot!

The exhibit feels like stepping into the bedroom of your teenage self – only with a lot less mess and clutter. There’s plenty for die-hard fans to uncover, with artefacts showcasing how emo wasn’t just a genre of music, but a movement and lifestyle that continues to influence fashion, culture, and even the way we express ourselves.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are posters from the bands previously mentioned, including MCR’s Black Parade era and Paramore’s early years. Expect rare concert footage and pictures from memorable gigs. I’m Not Okay even explores fan culture in-depth, including the DIY zines and fan art that were key to the scene’s identity.

You’ll also find vintage band merch that once adorned wardrobes and looks worldwide – from famous logo tees to sweatbands, badges, and studded belts!
