Over in East London’s Victoria Park Village, handily situated right by the bounds of Victoria Park itself, you’ll find one of London’s best pizzerias. ACE Pizza is doling out pies that blend Neapolitan- and New York-style pizzas alongside heaving pizza sandwiches and a drinks menu of inventive and pizza-inspired sips.
ACE Pizza only opened earlier this year, but they’ve been slinging pies for years now. Their story started like many of London’s most exciting eateries: with KERB. In their original guise, under the name Capish?, founder Rachel Jones laid the groundwork for what would become ACE Pizza. The pizzas then kicked off a long-term residency at Hackney’s beloved Pembury Tavern – where you can still eat the pizzas today.
Now, they’ve settled into a pink- and yellow-hued restaurant, whose interiors nostalgically evoke the spirit of the 80s. Just like the restaurant, the pizzas are a little old, a little new, and a whole lot of fun. Made with slow-fermented dough, they combine the “chew and char of Neapolitan dough with the structure and foldability of a New York slice”. This makes them perfect for chowing down on, without having to put your drink down.
On the menu at ACE Pizza
Now, as you’d expect, ACE Pizza has all the classic toppings, such as the Marg pizza. But their unique flavour combinations are where they really shine. The Double Pep amps up a classic pepperoni pie with, you guessed, double the pepperoni, elevated with a sesame seed crust. Other favourites include the Honey Pie with Spicy Salami, Fior Di Latte, Fennel Seeds, Hot Honey, and Guindilla Chillies and The Sausage with Fennel Sausage, Fresh Chillies, Creamed Spinach, Fior Di Latte, and Pecorino.
One extremely welcome addition to the menu at the bricks-and-mortar site is the pizza sandwiches. Revered by locals, these folded flatbread sandwiches are made with their slow-fermented pizza dough and feature fillings like the Caprese buratta, Mortadella & Straciatellaand Meatball Marinara. Be warned, though, these are only available at lunchtime – so don’t come too late lest you miss out.
Close menu readers will notice that the pizzeria also serves up some truly interesting drinks. These range from the pizza-inspired Hot Honey Marg (because every pizza, and drink, is better with hot honey) to the Grapefruit & Basil Martini. But the most intriguing drink on the menu has to be the Parm-Tini.This parmesan infused riff on a dirty martini will keep you coming back for sip after umami-filled sip.
