The new animated Netflix movie tells the story of the singing Thelma, who struggles to find her place in the world. Transforming into a majestic unicorn, Thelma’s rise to instant fame leads her to understand the complexities of the stars.
Thelma the unicorn premieres on Netflix May 17.

Brittany Howard – Thelma
Brittany Howard brings Thelma to life in Netflix’s latest animated film.
Thelma has a dream to become a singer one day. He wants to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals and even turns into a unicorn to gain fame and popularity.
As her journey continues, Thelma later realizes that happiness cannot be found with instant fame.
Thelma the unicorn serves as the voice acting debut of Brittany Howard. Howard is a five-time Grammy winner best known as the lead singer of Alabama Shakes.
Will Forte – Otis
Will Forte lends his voice to Otis, Thelma’s friend and bandmate who serves as her support system throughout her singing journey.
Otis, whom Thelma describes as a “six-tongued killer”, wants to realize his dream of creating a tabletop RPG known as Dungeons & Wagons (it’s like Dungeons & Dragons, but with Otis’ own unique style).
Forte is best known for his performances Saturday Night Live, The last man on earthand MacGruber.
Jemaine Clement – Vic Diamond
Jemaine Clement joins the cast of the animated film as Vic Diamond.
Vic Diamond is Nikki’s former manager who left her to transfer his services to Thelma. He is a mean guy who uses others to his advantage.
In the film, Diamond manipulates Thelma into performing solo, leaving her band (and friends) behind. He is also responsible for teaching Thelma the principles of becoming famous.
Clement previously voiced Tamato on Disney’s Moana. The actor also performed Flight of the Conchords and What we do in the shadows.
Fred Armisen – Danny Stallion
Fred Armisen joins the cast as Danny Stallion, Thelma’s celebrity boyfriend and VideoTubeTube megastar.
Vic Diamond has cast Danny as Thelma’s on-screen boyfriend to gain likes and followers.
Armisen has more than 100 credits and roles to his name Big mouth, Barryand The Simpsons.
Ally Dixon – Nikki Narwhal
Ally Dixon voices Nikki Narwhal, a famous whale pop star whom Thelma idolizes.
When Thelma becomes famous for her elegance and charisma, Nikki becomes jealous and asks her talent manager to look for something shady about the new pop star to bring her down.
Dixon has credits The Croods: Family Tree, Themand Kung Fu Panda: Dragon Knight.
Edi Patterson – Megan
Edi Patterson plays Megan, Nikki’s loyal and terrifying assistant.
Megan proves her loyalty to Nikki by doing everything she can to destroy Thelma’s career so her boss can become famous again.
From uncovering the secret of Thelma’s fake unicorn to hiring a few people to chase a rising star, Megan is determined to take her down.
Patterson previously appeared in e.g Vice principals, Righteous Gemsand Knives out.
Jon Heder – Reggie
Reggie (voiced by Jon Heder) is a member of Thelma’s band, the Rusty Buckets, which she portrays “punch master” thanks to his drum skills.
Reggie wants nothing but the best for Thelma as she pursues her dream, even if it means leaving the band.
Heder unites Thelma the unicorn director Jared Hess after working together Napoleon Dynamite. The actor also has accolades Blades of Glory and The Seat warmers.
Maliaka Mitchell – Peggy Purvis
Maliaka Mitchell makes her voice acting debut as Peggy Purvis Thelma the unicorn.
Peggy is a music producer and legendary blind musician who quickly notices Thelma’s rise to fame after going viral. He wants to be Thelma’s mentor because he sees great potential in her.
Speaking with TUDUM, Mitchell discussed the influences on her character and the effect her portrayal had on blind people:
“He has been influenced by the combination of my aunt and grandmother, their attitude, that cheeky, outgoing, outspoken personality. The fact that casting wants to be inclusive, that there is actually a demand for that authenticity. It allows the world to see blind people for who they really are and how we are just as normal as everyone else.”
Thelma the unicorn is Mitchell’s first acting credit.
Zach Galifianakis – Crusty Trucker
Zach Galifianakis voices Crusty Trucker Thelma the unicorn.
Crusty Trucker is the one responsible for “transforming” Thelma into a unicorn after accidentally spilling paint and glitter onto the titular pony while driving.
Galifianakis is best known for his role as Alan in the film Hangover trilogy. The actor also acted Due date, Big mouthand Birdman.
Shondrella Avery – Zirconia
Zirconia is Thelma’s bully, often teasing her about her dream of becoming a pop superstar. The character is voiced by Shondrella Avery.
Avery appears Napoleon Dynamite, Dominoesand The secret life of bees.
