The Wensleydale Heifer features in OpenTable’s top 100 for 2023

On the OpenTable website, The Wensleydale Heifer is described as “a traditional white-washed inn complete with leaded lights and swinging sign” that “gives the visitor a real flavour of Britain meaning it’s popular not only with locals but with tourists searching for the real Yorkshire.”

It adds: “From the lounge, with its comfortable leather settees, country pursuit paintings and imposing fireplace through to the wicker seating, beamed ceilings and eau de nil painted walls, the interior could have leapt from the pages of Country Homes magazine.

“The contemporary British menu includes seafood from across Britain plus locally sourced meat and veg, all prepared using the Wensleydale Heifer philosophy – keep it simple.”

On Tripadvisor, The Wensleydale Heifer has an impressive current rating of 5/5 out of 2,792 reviews.

This person commented: “Great atmosphere, excellent food with lots of choice together with friendly, efficient staff, made for a great lunch. The chicken liver parfait was delicious as were the tempura prawns. Try the truffle mayonnaise too. Definitely recommend.”

Also in North Yorkshire, Estbek House in Whitby made the famous list.

2 Newcastle restaurants included in OpenTable’s top 100 for 2023

Elsewhere in the North East, Peace and Loaf Restaurant and The French Quarter both located in Newcastle were named in OpenTable’s top 100 selection too.

Peace and Loaf Restaurant has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.5/5 out of 1,681 reviews.

A recent visitor posted: “My dietary requirements were catered for in advance which was amazing as I struggle usually. The chef was happy to adapt the menu as I chose the vegetarian menu but as I eat fish I asked if I could try the scallop.

“Every dish was explained and the flavours were unbelievable. Each dish was beautifully presented and gaps between dishes was perfect.

“Staff are very happy to discuss the menu and chat about the dishes.

“Can’t wait to go back when the menu changes.”

Meanwhile, The French Quarter has a 5/5 rating with 980 reviews on Tripadvisor.

Someone who returned to the restaurant wrote: “This was my second visit to the French Quarter, and this time I was on my own.

“Everything was perfect, from the moment I arrived: friendly service, beautifully cooked food (portions not too large), an excellent glass of Rhone wine, and a calm and relaxed atmosphere: a bit of music but not intrusive.

“Like the best of France, but under an arch in Newcastle. Vive la différence!
