The players are up in arms due to the announcement Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection and its lack of an Xbox release.

After spending years locked in the prison of rights deals and license fees, The Marvel vs Capcom franchise is back with a new collection. It brings together seven of Capcom’s most iconic super-powered fighting games, set in the world of Marvel Comics.

The Collection (released in June 2024 on Nintendo Direct) is set to arrive on PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch, and is the only legal place to play certified classics of the genre such as Marvel vs Capcom 2 with modern equipment.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection

Xbox fans expressed their dismay after the recent announcement Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection not released for Xbox Series X/S.

The collection of seven classic Capcom fighting games is skipping console after releasing on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Fans have taken to social media to tell about the decision. Xbox social channels are flooded with comments about the collection, including replies to posts that have nothing to do with the game.

Xbox president Sarah Bond’s X account has become one of the primary targets of these detractors, with gamers calling the Xbox executive for Marvel vs Capcom collection in series X/S.

The general opinion among fans seems to be the Xbox idea “losing in third party games” with this generation (via @The_CrapGamer X). Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection is just the latest third-party game to decide not to release on Xbox:

“Why isn’t this coming to Xbox? It’s a shame you put your exclusivity on all platforms and don’t have the guts to say directly what will happen or stay and now we’re losing out on 3rd party games.

It’s nice to know that we are lower class players for the developers…”

Others, like @ShoudlerWinter on X (formerly Twitter), pointed out that while Xbox has given third-party developers contracts for its Xbox Game Pass service, big names like Capcom are bypassing the platform holder:

“Capcom’s passing on Xbox with ‘Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection,’ ‘Monster Hunter Stories,’ ‘Mega Man Battle Network,’ and ‘The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures’ is ridiculous.”

You give them Gamepass deals, but they still skip Xbox.”

What makes things worse are the games Marvel vs Capcom 2 (considered the prize gems of this collection) are no longer playable on Xbox in any form.

In 2015 sales Marvel vs Capcom sequel (as well MVC 3) was discontinued due to Capcom losing the license to the Marvel characters. This led to long-running efforts to save the franchise known as the #FreeMVC2 movement.

Despite thousands getting involved (including big names in the fighting game community like Twitch streamer MaximillianDOOD), fan passion wasn’t enough to save the series (until now).

The Marvel vs Capcom the franchise has had a long history with Microsoft’s gaming console. Titles like Marvel vs Capcom 2, 3and Infinite all have appeared on Xbox over the years.

That makes the decision Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection to bypass the console even more confusing for some.

As some Xbox gamers online have noted, this isn’t the first Capcom game to give Microsoft’s console the cold shoulder.

Other recent titles such as Megaman Battle Network Collection, Monster Hunter storiesand The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures also haven’t come to Xbox or have any plans to come to it.

According to a report by Windows Central’s Alexander Cope, this could be due to the technical framework that Microsoft uses for the Xbox Series X/S when handling older games.

Their sources have said that Capcom’s defense of Xbox players is likely related to the MT Framework engine that Microsoft uses to port older games to newer systems.

Cope wrote that the Japanese gaming giant has “no pipeline to port older MT Framework titles to Xbox’s modern ERA system”

This means that a publisher’s costs will increase significantly if they are to survive this technological bump.

This investment seems to be Capcom’s biggest hurdle with these classic game collections.

The Japanese tech giant is thought to have preferred to skip Xbox altogether, losing potential sales on the platform, rather than invest the time and resources needed to build a workflow for classics such as Marvel vs Capcom games on the platform.

Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection expected to be released sometime in 2024.
