Just when you think you know all the cool places London has to offer, another pops up seemingly out of nowhere. One such place is tucked away in an unassuming side alley opposite Liverpool Street Station.

If you’ve ever had brunch at The Breakfast Club in Spitalfields, you’ve probably seen the random fridge sitting next to the till. No, it’s not where they keep the eggs and avocados – it’s actually the door to one of the quirkiest bars in the capital.

The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is the true definition of a hidden gem. You have to know to “ask for the mayor” before you even get in (but shh, you never heard that from me).

After recreating a grown-up version of Narnia, you’ll step into a smoky, dimly lit basement adorned with pictures of cats and Princess Diana. Decorated after a mountain cabin and filled to the brim with vintage furniture, the intimate venue is an ideal place to woo a date or impress out-of-town friends.

Bartenders specialize in quirky cocktails like the Cinema Paradiso, a vodka number complete with homemade popcorn, and the Mayor’s Tea Party, which features an Earl Grey-infused gin served in a vintage teapot. If that’s not quite your scene, there’s also plenty of beer, wine and mocktails available.

Not one to shy away from a theme, the cat-obsessed bar is handing out free drinks to people unlucky enough to be named after lasagna-loving Garfield. They also offer late-night classics like nachos, fries, and burgers, as well as a two-hour bottomless brunch “extravaganza” on Saturday and Sunday.

Once you’ve had your fill of all the secrecy, you can make a dignified exit through the toilets and continue your night as if nothing ever happened.
