A school in Gloucestershire has a firm belief that ‘an education’ is more than just a set of qualifications.
Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre instead offers an incredible range of opportunities which enable young people to enhance their natural talents, gifts and abilities.
With this approach, it hopes to develop mature, confident and thoughtful citizens who will go into the world beyond Newent as lifelong learners capable of achieving great things and making a difference.
Since its establishment in 1925, the school has seen huge investment to help its students achieve this.
Following refurbishments and £1million capital investment, Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre has introduced new classrooms, a new Sixth Form Centre building and an industry-standard catering learning facility, and improved its kitchen and eating facilities, History/Music block and introduced entire-site CCTV.
Facilities also include fully equipped suites of science laboratories, design technology workshops, IT suites, an independent learning centre, a sports hall, a fitness suite, a My Ride studio and gymnasium, a swimming pool, astroturf pitches, tennis courts and a suite of art rooms.
The school strives to ensure that all of its students are supported to be articulate, tolerant, resilient and caring young people.
Offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, it starts with the staff and pastoral team making a point of getting to know every student so that they can support them in the best way they can. To add to this, its house system and tutor groups allow for even more support between the students themselves.
This aim is further aided by its challenging and diverse curriculum that ensures every student has the opportunity to succeed, and its thorough programme of personal, social and health education (PSHE), citizenship, work experience, enterprise education and career guidance.
Extra-curricular activities are also a very important part of this. The school offers a wide variety of these so that every student has the chance to find their talent and interest. They include sports, orchestras and bands, choirs, a range of different clubs (such as photography, history, scuba diving, science and engineering), drama productions, camping; international trips and exchanges, curriculum visits, field courses, ski trips, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, arctic expeditions and endurance cycle challenges.
With full access to leadership, enrichment, community and character-building opportunities, students are able to make positive contributions, realise their dreams and live happy, healthy, fulfilling lives.
Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is committed to working with parents, carers, employers, universities and the wider community to develop the qualities, skills and attitudes required by students to achieve success in the classroom and beyond.
From this, it has been recognised nationally for its offerings to its students.
It has been recognised by the Government as being a Healthy School for its in-house catering team and school dining area, Meet ‘n’ Eat, became the first secondary school in Gloucestershire to be awarded the Mental Health Champion Award by GHLL, and in 2020 was made a Gold Standard school for Cyber Security by the GCHQ.
