The second game also takes creative liberties with its story timeline. The last of us part 2 takes place after a five-year time jump from the end of the first game, and the sequel mostly covers three days in Seattle from the perspectives of two different characters.

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 (the game) and HBO’s The Last of Us.

Time in Jackson

The last of us

The last of us part 2 opens in the settlement of Jackson, where Joel and Ellie have been living with Joel’s brother Tommy for five years since the end of the first game.

Season 2 appears to open the same way, with the trailer showing footage of an older Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal) living in Jackson’s settlement during the winter.

Fans previously got a glimpse of Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, but the trailer offered the first real full look at the character as she approaches the Jackson colony to hunt down Joel and is attacked by a horde of infected.

Shortly after this scene, Joel dies in Abby’s arms. While this scene isn’t included in the trailer for spoiler reasons, it’s the main catalyst that sets off the second game and causes Ellie to travel to Seattle and seek revenge – so it’ll likely be covered at the start of Season 2.

Seattle

After Joel’s controversial death, which is just one of the shocking scenes the show is sure to adapt, the game follows Ellie’s quest for revenge spread over three days in Seattle.

Based on the scenes in the trailer, it looks like at least the first day of Ellie’s time in Seattle will be covered in the second season. The last of us. Many of today’s events, including Ellie’s serenade to her girlfriend Dina and the attack by the infected in the subway tunnel, appear to be staged.

The latest trailer also features the first look at the Seraphim, or Scars, a new and dangerous religious group in Seattle that can be identified by the scars on their faces. Ellie doesn’t encounter the Scars until Day 2 in Seattle, but their inclusion could hint that Season 2 will cover Abby’s side of the story as well.

in The last of us part 2players cover Ellie’s three days in Seattle and then Abby’s, meaning the timeline jumps mid-game. One of the big questions The last of us Season 2 is whether the series will follow suit. However, some scenes in the trailer show that the series will proceed in chronological order instead.

The scenes of Abby kneeling by the grave, Scars hunting in the woods, and Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac torturing a prisoner are all events that take place on Abby’s first day in Seattle. This suggests that the TV series will switch back and forth between both Ellie’s and Abby’s timelines.

Flashbacks

The last of us

To make things even more mysterious, The last of us part 2 jumps between multiple timelines, some of which are now with a 19-year-old Ellie, and occasionally goes back to the five-year gap between the first and second games to fill in what happened between Joel and Ellie.

Some of these scenes also appear to have been filmed The last of us Season 2. Specifically, the scene where Joel teaches Ellie how to play the acoustic guitar, and then the scene between Joel and Ellie on the porch of her house, both of which appear as flashbacks throughout the game and were included in the teaser trailer.

What will change in The Last of Us Season 2?

Although The last of us Season 1 was a very close adaptation of the events of the video game, it wasn’t afraid to deviate, and when it did, this sometimes led to the best material of the season, such as the much talked about queer expansion. The romance between Bill and Frank.

Creators and co-showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have both commented on the nature of the TV format, which allows them to make changes.

Going into season 2, Mazin said that “does some things exactly as they were in the game” and they do “make (some) different” which allows them to offer “interesting twists” both for new viewers and fans of the game.

Trailer for The last of us Season 2 has already previewed one of these changes.

In the game’s opening scene, Joel reveals to his brother Tommy what he did at the Salt Lake City hospital to save Ellie. In the TV series, it seems that Joel will instead have this conversation with a new character in the Catherine O’Hara mystery, who could be in the role of some kind of therapist.

Druckmann also told Variety that Season 2 The last of us offers backstories of characters they never got to explore in-game:

“There are things this season that I’m really excited about — things that we hinted at — one scene in particular comes to mind that I think fans of the game will eat up because it really kind of tells you a lot of backstory to this important character that we didn’t really have a way to do that in play.”

The season’s marketing material hasn’t yet hinted at who this might be, but The last of us characters like the Prophet of the Seraphim or Isaac, the leader of the Washington Liberation Front, were never fully explored in the game, so they could get their due here.

Trailers for season 2 / The last of us So far, they have shown that the series will once again closely follow the game’s source material. However, HBO may be leaving out many important scenes from these marketing materials, making it difficult to gauge exactly how far into the game’s plot season 2 will go.

The last of us Season 2 will be released on HBO in early 2025.
