A brand new theatre is opening up in Canary Wharf this autumn, and with it comes the long-awaited, first-ever stage adaptation of the beloved Suzanne Collins tales The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games: On Stage is due to land on October 20, 2025and will take place at the brand-new Troubador Canary Wharf theatre, which will hold 1,200 people and is a sister venue to that of the same name in Wembley Park – which is currently the home of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Starlight Express.

The play will be based on the first installment of Suzanne Collins’s series of books, with the award-winning Conor McPherson, whose work includes Girl From The North Country and The Seafareron writing duty for the stage. Matthew Dunster is directing the play, with his previous work including 2:22 – A Ghost Story and Hangmen.

Speaking on the news, Conor McPherson said: “As a dad to a teenager myself, it’s especially gratifying working on a story whose values of resilience and moral courage speak to young people in these uncertain times. Our singular focus is to honour Suzanne Collins’ achievement with a faithful adaptation that’s as thrilling on stage as it is on the page.

“It’s been a great pleasure to watch the theatrical language of this show evolving through explosive workshops under Matthew Dunster’s inspired partnership with choreographer Charlotte Broom and their tireless team of young performers.”

This marks the world premiere of the very first adaptation of the series, which has long been rumoured, and comes after the anticipated next prequel written by Suzanne Collins to The Hunger Gameswhich will be released via Scholastic on March 1, 2025. The Troubadour Theatre will also show it in a round format with the stage in the centre of the audience.

Speaking on the news of the adaptation, author of The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins said: “I’m thrilled that The Hunger Games is in the hands of gifted playwright Conor McPherson and accomplished director Matthew Dunster. Connor has done a fantastic adaptation, which is quite unique from the screenplay. And Matthew’s immersive, dynamic staging gives the audience a brand-new way to experience the story.”
