There are few things more disturbing in everyday life than signs of black mold creeping into our homes. A few black spots and we know there is a problem with too much moisture in the air. And then, if we find ourselves sneezing or feeling under the weather, seeing black spores on our walls and ceilings is cause for concern. The problem is how do we deal with it?
Dehumidifiers are one of the autumn’s hot sellers and it seems that many of us are looking for solutions to cure rooms from dampness and poor ventilation. Baths with calcium chloride crystals are a popular choice of dehumidifier, collecting inches of water after weeks in a room, while electric compressor-driven dehumidifiers are also in vogue – many of them quite cheap at around £20 to £30.
However, according to an energy consultant, a reliable brand of dehumidifier can remove moisture faster and more efficiently than competitors in the market. The Ebac 2650E 18 liter dehumidifier with air purification and wash mode sells for £327 on Amazon, and is an investment compared to cheaper models. But its British-made machines designed for Britain’s inclement weather are recommended as they are highly capable of fighting mold and removing liters of moisture in just one day.
Energy consultant Adam Tilford, who owns a model of the brand, said: “Passive dehumidifiers in the form of plastic bags or small pods containing calcium chloride may seem cheap at first, around £7 each, but they offer a poor cost advantage over electric compressor-driven dehumidifiers , such as those manufactured by Ebac.
“A compressor-powered dehumidifier, while costing a couple of hundred pounds, will extract much more moisture from the air and last many years. Even factoring in the cost of electricity, the cost per liter of water removed from your home will be much less when you use a compressor-powered dehumidifier than passive disposable products that require the purchase of endless chemical refills.”
Ebac itself states that the model is “guaranteed to eliminate condensation, moisture, mold and odors around your home”, adding that it is the only electric compressor-driven dehumidifier “made in the UK for the British climate”. It has an extraction rate of 18 liters with low power consumption – perfect for homes with up to four bedrooms.
So far, the product has only five-star reviews on Amazon. One reviewer wrote: “We have found the product to more than live up to expectations and do an excellent job. It is for this reason that we decided to purchase a similar model. We have no reservations about recommending this product to other potential buyers.”
Buyers looking for an alternative electric compressor-driven dehumidifier may be interested in the Blyss WDH-316DB 16-litre dehumidifier, available for £149.98 from Screwfix.
