One of the world’s largest consumer cooperatives continues to make extraordinary efforts to highlight climate action.
Last year, the Co-op Group announced its partnership with the RSPB to help deliver Nature Neighborhoods.
This UK-wide initiative aims to help local, mostly urban communities to support nature in their neighborhoods and tackle the global climate and nature crises at a local level.
Nature Neighborhoods will also have access to the Co-op’s unique network of Member Pioneers, bringing people together to inspire and empower them to make significant changes.
Member Pioneers work to address the big issues that Co-op members and their communities care about, connecting and collaborating to create happy, healthy communities for all.
Collaboration in Islington
The Nature Neighborhoods project will investigate the root causes of the nature and climate crises in a local context.
It will unite communities with local decision-makers to make nature and climate action essential to future planning.
One of the 18 community organizations involved is Octopus, which works with 15 of Islington’s largest multi-purpose community centres.
Together they will co-produce and co-deliver programmes, projects and activities informed by local communities.
Co-op Fortnight 2024
The Co-op Group is supporting Co-op Fortnight 2024, organized by Co-operatives UK, which runs from Monday 24 June to Sunday 7 July.
Every year, hundreds of co-ops and organizations across the UK come together to celebrate and promote co-ops during Co-op Fortnight.
This year’s campaign celebrates how cooperatives offer a completely different way of doing business.
They are democratic, they are member-owned and they are responsible companies.
One way for the cooperatives to take responsibility is by taking climate measures.
Ambitious climate goals
The Co-op Group is always keen to address the important issues that its member-owners care about.
Recognizing the ongoing impact of climate change on its member-owners, their communities and the planet, it has set ambitious climate targets.
It continues to reduce its operations’ energy use, make changes to its transport network and work closely with suppliers to reduce the climate impact of its products.
The Co-op Group understands that its five million member-owners also want to take climate action and need support to do so.
Therefore, it aims to empower them to tackle climate change and protect nature in their local areas by providing funding, resources and opportunities to learn, participate and campaign.
Co-op Academies Trust
As part of its commitment to inspiring children and transforming their futures, the Co-op Group sponsors the Co-op Academies Trust, a group of schools in the North of England doing things differently.
Founded on collaborative principles in 2010, these academies are dedicated to providing children with a better education – one that goes beyond qualifications to include inspiration and the value of working together with teachers, fellow students and the wider community.
Comprising primary, secondary, special schools and a college, the Trust operates under the belief that by raising aspirations and offering a leadership education alongside forward-looking experiences and opportunities outside the classroom, it can develop tomorrow’s leaders and strengthen communities.
