Although the American legal system at times threatened the freedom of their polygamous family, brown women sought to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. Independence is especially meaningful to Kody’s exes Meri, Janelle and Christine, as they have flourished on their own in recent years.

Meri, Janelle and Christine were in a plural marriage with Kody Brown. Together with Kody’s fourth wife, Robyn Brown, they raised a family of 18 children. The Sister wives the world was shocked when Christine ended her marriage and left the family in 2021. It was more shocking when Janelle and Meri announced their spiritual union with Kody within the next two years. Meri, Janelle and Christine have shared their journey with viewers via social media.

Janelle’s bond with her children has remained strong through her marital problems

July 4, 2021 To Jane shared photos of her children Gabriel Brown, Garrison, Hunter and Savanah. Her caption explained that they had spent the day in Williamsburg, Virginia, a significant place in American history. All of Janelle’s kids dressed up in patriotic red, white and blue for the party, and Gabriel even dressed in an American flag. Independence Day is especially important to Janelle’s family because both Garrison and Hunter served in the United States Armed Forces.


Janelle has always had a close bond with her children. He wrote that all his children were traveling with him except his son, Sister wives‘ Logan Brown. Although Janelle was still married to Kody at the time, she is not in any of his photos. Janelle used to appreciate the freedom polygamy gave her because Kody had to split his time between his wives. As her marriage to Kody became more challenging, Janelle continued to lean on her relationships with her children. He also embraced his love of travel.

After the 4th July 2022 holiday Christine published a picture where her daughters Mykelti Padron and Ysabel Brown enjoy meat and cheese. Everything on the breadboard was red, white and blue. The batting was laid out in the stars and stripes pattern of the American flag. Mykelti and Ysabel also dressed in the colors of the flag, right down to Ysabel’s blue nails.

Christine is known for her love of cooking. She hosts her own cooking show, Cooking only with Christine, after her divorce. Christine was often considered the housewife of the Brown family Sister wives, her knack for entertaining and her role of staying at home to raise the kids. With her culinary talent and enthusiasm for the holidays, it’s no surprise that Christine was able to put together such an impressive and festive meal.

In 2023, Sea celebrate independence day with a patriotic selfie. He wore a red, white and blue shirt with the words “Hello, America.” Meri added a caption reflecting on the meaning of Independence Day, writingWhatever you do today, whoever you spend it with, I hope you feel happy, safe and loved!

This photo was Meri’s first time celebrating the 4th of July since her marriage to Kody ended. His message was understated, but it emphasized the importance of a holiday rather than a celebration. Meri has been focused on her independence since she went off on her own, away from the rest of the Brown family. Part of Meri’s journey has been learning to love herself regardless of other people’s opinions about her and knowing “happy, safe and loved” is his main goal.

Christine started celebrating Independence Day early, posting a video in June 2024 that showed him decorating his home for the holiday nearly a month in advance. Ironically, he was wearing the same shirt that Meri had worn the previous year. Her decor included a stars-and-stripes quilt, a flag, and a red, white, and blue wreath.

Since ending her marriage to Kody, Christine has been happier than ever. Now married to David Woolley, she has been open about how much she loves being monogamous. David allows Christine to be her unapologetic self. This is a big change from his previous marriage, where Kody always expected his wife to follow his rules, even at holiday parties.
