If you’re looking for a day trip or weekend getaway from London, the village of Mickleham in Surrey is a top choice.

Not only does it offer charming scenery, but it’s also home to the Running Horses pub, which serves an ‘epic’ Sunday roast worth writing home about.

The 16th-century pub has been recognized for its culinary excellence, having won the top title at the National Pub and Bar Awards 2023. The menu offers a range of dishes, including some pretty fancy options (we’re looking at you, arancini), but it’s the steaks that really steals the show.

Choose between fried herb pork belly, fried sirloin or classic fried chicken.

Visitors have taken to Tripadvisor to share their glowing reviews of Running Horses. A satisfied customer wrote: “The inn is in the small village of Mickleham and offers cozy rooms, furnished with water and coffee (Nespresso). The restaurant served very good food, with a nice terrace where you can enjoy food and drink. Good selection of whiskey . too..”

Another reviewer said: “Absolutely loved my experience here on a second visit. Richard looked after us really well. The food was delicious. Best steak in town. And we had the chocolate fondant for dessert.”

A third added: “This is a lovely old country pub. Real fires, horse brass, good ales and wines and the friendly bar make for a pleasant evening or a stop when walking or cycling in the Surrey countryside.”

If you plan to get there by public transport, take bus 57 from Darlaston Road in Wimbledon to Fairfield Bus Station. Then it’s just a short three minute walk to Eden Street where you can hop on bus 465 for 52 minutes and get off at the church – and voila, you’ve arrived.

For those who prefer to drive, the journey is much faster. Simply travel down the A3 from Wimbledon until you reach Surrey’s A243.

This leads you to the A24 which takes you directly to the pub. The entire journey should take between 35 and 40 minutes.

Alternatively, if you want to go by train, you can take the Victoria service to Dorking and then catch the bus from there.
