The American Idol winner attracts a large crowd after creating an unexpected scene at the airport

American Idol‘s Just Sam got a lot of attention at the airport when they started singing along with a piano player. Just Sam was introduced to a national audience through American Idol season 18. Unfortunately, the contestants had to perform from home this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Sam breezed through the competition with covers of Fantasia’s “I Believe”, Andra Day’s “Rise Up” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and was crowned the winner over Arthur Gunn. Since American Idol, Sam’s life has been pretty tumultuous, including being dropped by a record label.

Only Sam recently headed to the airport to board a flight, but something very unexpected ended up happening. Sam posted a video on Instagram of them performing Etta James’ “At Last” next to the man playing the piano. The camera panned around to show that the crowd had gathered to watch Sam and the piano player perform.

In the comments section of their Instagram post Sam only said that they were “impressed“with his ability”to create a crowd…a crowd of people with a place to be.” They added a crying and laughing emoji at the end of the caption. It is unclear at which airport this performance took place. It’s not common to see musicians performing in airports, but considering the area was roped off and the piano was topped with a toe bowl, it seems this airport is used to this kind of activity.

This isn’t the first time Just Sam has hit the headlines after winning American Idol. After signing a contract with the record company, they quickly fell apart when there was friction between the singer and the record company. No original music was released during that short period, although Sam ended up buying back the songs they recorded, which seriously affected their financial situation. Then singer went viral after it was revealed that they were back on the subwaysthe job they had before the audition American Idol, and started working at Starbucks.

Of all American Idol winners over the years, Just Sam clearly has the worst experience since competing on a singing competition show. The rapid dropping of the record company was only the first step in a turbulent phase of their lives. Fortunately, Things started to turn around for Sam when Timbaland took them under his wing and became their mentors.
