Netflix Squid game the series will return for a second season, but when it will be released is a question.
The hit Korean drama set the world on fire after the release of its first season. It quickly became one of the biggest Netflix series of all time, launching a multi-media franchise that includes merchandise, real-life activations, and even a streaming reality show.
When is Squid Game season 2 coming out?
Soon after Squid game Season 1 hit Netflix in the fall of 2021, and discussions about Season 2 began to swirl.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk started talking about a second season as early as October 2021 (via Variety ), but wasn’t sure if it would happen.
However, just months later (June 2022), Season 2 was officially greenlit Netflix.
However, no specific publication information has been made public since then.
Series star Lee Jung Jae told AllKPop in February 2023 that filming for the series will take place “summer” that year and is expected to last “10 months:”
“Squid Game 2″ will start filming in the summer and will probably take about 10 months to shoot. We also worked on season 1 for about 10 months, but that was due to delays caused by COVID-19. Season 2 is bigger in scale, so it will probably take longer to complete. ”
With Season 1 working in a similar 10-month production window, you can start to see the Season 2 release plan come into play.
Squid game Season 1 began filming in June 2020 and was finally released in September 2021 (15 months later).
This would mean filming for season 2 would begin in August 2023, so fans can expect the series to return sometime between October and November 2024.
Who’s Coming Back for Squid Game Season 2?
Shipping information to the destination Squid game Season 2 is few and far between, but some names have been confirmed to return for the second batch of episodes.
In April 2022, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that both Lee Jung-jae’s central rival Seong Gi-hun and games master Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) would return for season 2 (via Deadline):
“Gi-hun definitely. He’ll be back and I think Front Man will be back too.”
Gung Yoo’s game salesman is also expected to return, along with Wi Ha-joon’s Hwang Jun-ho, the detective investigating the deadly competition.
So far, everyone from Season 1 is returning Squid games‘ sophomore effort, but since almost everyone from the first few episodes sadly perished at the hands of the series’ killer games, these chosen names make sense.
Hwang also revealed the new actors who will appear in the series. While the exact details of each character are still shrouded in mystery, fans can expect most (if not all) of them to be new competitors hoping to slay Squid Games.

What happens in Squid Game Season 2?
Netflix is still keeping plot details under wraps Squid game Season 2 close to the vest.
Season 1 ended with Lee Jung-jaen’s Gi-hun finally making it through the horrific games as the heart of the show and proving to be the last contestant alive.
After the event ends, he receives his huge prize money, but realizes that things are just getting started, while new recruits are ready to compete.
So sure, season 2 will focus on Gi-hun’s story as he struggles with the idea that this cycle will never end unless he does something personally.
Star Lee Jung-jae told AllKPop that Season 2 will be a story “revenge,” focusing on the battle between Gi-hun and Lee Byung-hun’s Front Man (aka one of the men behind the games):
“It’s probably safe to assume. As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 is revenge, and the key person who directed the games action in season 1 was Lee Byung Hun’s sunbae, so it looks like the two of us will be central to this next story characters.”
Hi-gun says we’ll see each other “play in the arena again” Along with Lee (per person):
“I have no idea what’s going to happen or the extent of it, but the only thing (Hwang) told me is that Seong Gi-hun is going to be on the show again and he’s going to play in the arena again.”
So Season 2 is likely to be the story of a Season 1 character risking his life once again, but this time to defeat the creators of this deadly competition.
Is Squid Game season 2 the last?
There has been no official information about anything else Squid game Season 2 at this point.
It has been reported that Netflix may choose to film seasons 2 and 3 of the series at the same time; however, the streamer denied these rumors saying ” Squid game the production team is giving everything to prepare for season 2″ no mention of Season 3 (via Soompi):
“To create a show that will bring joy to the fans, the production team of ‘Squid Game’ is giving everything to prepare for the second season.
As for a possible third season, Netflix had nothing more to say on the subject: “We are still in the early stages (of planning), concrete details have not been decided yet.”
Although it’s not an official confirmation, it seems more than likely a season 3 Squid game will eventually happen, especially given the uber success the franchise has achieved thus far.
Fans can also look forward to the continuation of the series’ reality show Squid Game: The Challenge also return.
Season 2 of the reality competition series was greenlit on Netflix just days before the Season 1 finale, and is expected to air sometime in 2025 (via Variety ).
