Earlier this year, it was announced that Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away is headed to London’s West End next April, with a limited 12-week run at the London Coliseum. And now, that 12-week run has just become 17, with an extra five weeks added to the schedule after phenomenal demand, taking it up to August 24, 2024.
Reimagined for the stage by Toho Theatrical Department and Olivier and Tony Award-winning director John Caird, who you might know from a small production called Les Misérables, the European premiere of the show will feature the original Japanese cast from its sell-out tour in 2022.
Hosted at the largest theatre in London’s West End, the production will be performed in Japanese with English captions, and will feature the film’s spectacular original score by Joe Hisaishi, played by a live orchestra.
Hayao Miyazaki’s film was a blockbusting hit after its release in 2001, winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. The story follows a young Chihiro who is travelling to a new home with her family when she stumbles across a curious world overrun by peculiar spirits. She is put to work in a bathhouse where she must keep her wits about her in order to survive this mysterious place and free her parents, who have been turned into pigs.
Spirited Away will run at the London Coliseum between April 30 – August 24, 2024. Tickets are available now, and can be booked here. Under £30 tickets will be available for all showings, though the price will vary depending on the type of seat you pick. New dates now mean there are an added 90,000 tickets up for grabs, with over 20,000 of these coming in at the less-than-£40 mark.
