Looks

Its sharp lines and geometric Skoda grille give the latest Fabia a fresh, modern look. Fabia drivers can ‘design’ their own car by choosing from a bright array of colours and personalisation options including different colour options for the wheels, roof and door mirrors. It’s a shame the interior doesn’t have the same quality look, its nature is far more noticeable inside.

Practicality

Skoda has considered the little things that make life easier like the ice scraper hidden inside the fuel cap, a holder to display parking tickets and storage boxes under the seat and in the armrest. We like the option of the small waste bin, which means we can say farewell to that collection of rubbish normally found in our door compartments! The Fabia has the largest boot of any small hatchback and all models come with Bluetooth and a digital radio.

Driving

The Fabia isn’t the car to buy if you’re looking for driving fun, but it’s got great visibility and is easy to drive and park thanks to easy to operate controls, like the smooth gearbox and steering that gives you a good feel for the car.

Safety

Crash test experts Euro NCAP gave the Fabia a full five star rating. It comes with six airbags and you can add the latest technology like sensors to warn for driver drowsiness and a limiter to stop you going above a certain speed. We also like the clever braking system available on most models which applies the brakes if you aren’t quick enough, reducing the risk of a low speed crash, along with your insurance premiums.

Running Costs

This latest model comes with low running costs, low or zero road tax charges and modest insurance bills. Fuel economy is good right across the engine range, with Skoda claiming its petrol engines will give up to 60mpg and diesel engines up to 79mph. But an increase in its price means the Fabia isn’t as affordable as it once was.

GH Verdict

The ideal small hatchback should be affordable, dependable and big on space we think the Skoda Fabia has all this and more.

Also Consider

Ford Fiesta or Peugeot 208
