Simon Mahon is stepping down as General Manager of The Grand, York Hotel after five years in the role.
Mahon plans to move to Cornwall with his family for “the next exciting chapter”.
Simon joined the five AA Red Star property in 2020 from apartment hotel company Edyn and previously managed the Lancaster Hotel in Bangkok.
During his tenure, The Grand, York achieved significant accolades, including Catey winning the Group Hotel of the Year in 2022.
writing on LinkedIn, Mahon said: “It has turned out that leaving Grand is really hard. It’s impossible to say goodbye to this beautiful city, great business and great team without feeling more than a little sad, but I look back on the last few years and my heart is full.
“It’s been an incredible journey. What an absolute privilege to be the custodian of this truly special hotel during challenging times in hospitality. As a team, we not only overcame these challenges, but also achieved significant milestones… with a party or two along the way.”
The Grand, York has appointed a new manager and an announcement is expected in the coming weeks. In the meantime, hotel manager Chris Cooper will take on the role of acting CEO.
Owned by Splendid Hospitality, the Grand in York opened in 2010 and underwent a £15m refurbishment in 2018, adding 100 new rooms and doubling its capacity to 207 rooms.
The hotel restaurant, which holds three AA roses, is ambitiously aiming for a Michelin star with its new menu.
