Looks like our friends across the pond are trading in the American dream for a life in the UK, with applications for UK citizenship from Americans have hit a record-breaking high.

According to a recent article by the Financial Times, over 6,100 American citizens applied for British citizenship in 2024—a 26% jump from the year prior. That’s a whole lot of people trading in their french fries for fish ‘n chips.

But why are so many Americans suddenly applying for citizenship? Let’s have a look-see.

What’s behind this citizenship increase?

There are a few key reasons behind this transatlantic shift, and no, it’s not the appeal of Greggs, although let’s be honest, it should be! First and foremost, the political climate in the U.S. has been a significant motivator, as well as new taxation regulations here in the UK.

The re-election of Donald Trump in November 2024 has helped drive an increase in migration, prompting some Americans to seek a change of scenery more in line with their political beliefs.

Additionally, changes in the UK tax laws have also played a role. The abolition of the non-domiciled (non-dom) tax status has led some Americans residing in the UK to apply for citizenship, aiming to retain flexibility, as well as security for themselves and their families.

The new tax change, starting in April 2025, means many foreign residents will face higher tax bills on their global earnings. They previously were allowed to avoid paying tax on overseas income and gains, with that coming to an end this spring.

This uptick is part of a larger pattern of increased migration to more affluent countries with stronger economies. In 2023, legal migration to some of the world’s wealthiest nations reached an all-time high, sparking discussions about immigration policies and their societal impacts.

If you’re wondering what makes the UK so appealing to our American cousins, not only do we boast a shared language and cultural ties, but London’s status as a global financial hub, along with its vibrant arts scene make it an attractive place for professionals and creatives alike.
