With summer just beginning, allergy season is now in full swing. June, July and August are usually the months when both tree and grass pollen are high.

For those who suffer from them, a good way to alleviate the symptoms is to get an air purifier. Amazon has a great range of them, including the Philips 800 series air purifier which has just been reduced from £154.99 to £94.99. You can also get it for £100 at Argos.

Its triple filtration system works to capture pollen, allergens, pet hair, dander, smoke and dust. It also has a particle sensor that can detect pollution and select the right speed, and consumes only 20W to clean the air – less than a regular light bulb.

As it is important to change the filter every 10-12 months depending on use and air quality, you can get the HALIEVE True HEPA Air Purifier Filter compatible with Philips, available for £26.99 from Amazon. The air purifier has a rating of 4.6 from over 1,700 reviews.

One shopper wrote: “As I’ve aged my allergies have worsened and after some research we settled on a Philips model and the difference has amazed me. No more debilitating sneezing fits, sleeping better and being able to taper off my steroids – for anyone with allergies to pollen or dust, this is the answer.”

Another added: “Great product to keep all the particles away from yourself, I have really bad pollen allergies and it’s a pain to keep windows open. Since getting this air purifier it’s much more manageable and I feel more comfortable in my room.”

There has been some criticism of the product, but some customers complained that it had no effect on air quality: “It was much bigger than expected, also very loud and the sleep mode was basically off. It made no difference to odors, dust, etc . – a waste of money overall as I feel there are cheaper and better options on the market.”

Elsewhere, there’s the Russell Hobbs Ozone Free Clean Air Pro, priced at £89 at Dunelm. The three-layer filtration system is said to capture 99.95% of particles, including smoke, pollen, dust and pet dander.

It only has one review so far, but a five-star rating. “The air purifier has made a big difference being on for just a couple of hours a day and only costs a few pennies to run,” said one buyer.
