An exciting new supported internship course for young people with Education Health and Care plans has launched in Manchester.

Run in partnership between Bridge College, Project Search and Sodexo, the structured, work-based study programme is aimed at 18- to 24-year-olds who have an EHCP and are looking for an opportunity to move into the world of work.

Participants will be based at Sodexo’s site in Salford and will have opportunities to work at sites across Greater Manchester where they provide facilities management, food services and more.

With 70% of DFN Project SEARCH graduates gaining jobs at the end of the programme, the one academic year course allows interns the opportunity to secure paid employment on completion, along with developing other meaningful skills.

Specialist education

Bridge College is the first step to an independent, happy adult life for its learners.

Based in Manchester, it offers specialist education for students aged 16 to 25 with learning difficulties, disabilities, complex health needs and autism.

Every day the college provides personalised support, tailored learning programmes and hands-on life skills to give young people the confidence to exceed their aspirations.

It wants to prepare students for all aspects of adulthood, from community life to independent, healthy living and the world of work and wants everyone to leave feeling confident for their future.

Fantastic opportunity

This new supported internship course will bridge a huge gap in provision for young people in specialist education who are looking to increase independence and begin their careers.

Adam Proctor, Assistant Principal at Bridge College said: “The unemployment rate for people with learning disabilities highlights the need for students with EHCPs to have the same opportunities to access work as those around them.

“At Bridge College, we equip our students with the essential life skills to go on and live a more fulfilling and independent life.

“Our internship programme is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work towards their own individual aspirations and a more fulfilling and independent life once they leave college.”
