If you’re after a new, gritty drama to binge-watch on Netflix this month, then Fool Me Once starring Michelle Keegan has to be it. But, where was it filmed?
The series, adapted from author Harlan Coben’s best-selling novel, follows Maya, who is trying to come to terms with the brutal murder of her husband, Joe, when she shockingly sees him alive on her secret nanny-cam.
Netflix made a pretty major change to where the story is set for their eight-part adaptation, so here is everything we know about the filming locations for Fool Me Once.
Where is Fool Me Once set?
The series is set in the fictional town of Winhurst, which is a huge change from Harlan Coben’s original book, which is set in New York.
Chatting to about how the series differs from the novel, Michelle Keegan, who plays Maya, said: “The book’s set in New York so it’s totally different now because they’re in Manchester. It sort of grounded it for me.”
Joanna Lumley, who plays Maya’s mother-in-law Judith, added: “I think it worked really well. It switched over very easily without any sense that you’re losing too much. And also, Harlan and his team had written in a new strand which was a very English strand, Adeel’s character. That whole sort of subplot was beautiful.
“So, the book had sort of been plasticined, morphed into a kind of British shape, and it worked really well.”
Is Winhurst a real place?
We’re sorry to say that Winhurst is, in fact, not a real place.
It’s a fictional location which we can assume is supposed to be somewhere in the north of England, near cities like Manchester or Cheshire (which is where parts of the series was filmed!).
Where was Fool Me Once filmed?
The series was filmed across the north of England in areas such as Manchester, Oldham, Cheshire and more.
For the grand Burkett family home and Joe and Maya’s wedding scenes, they were filmed in and around Arley Hall and Gardens, which is near Northwich in Cheshire.
Show producer Jessica Taylor told Manchester Evening News that the location even got Harlan’s approval. She said: “Harlan always says, ‘I want it to look really English’ and when we showed him Arley Hall he said, ‘that’s what I’m talking about.'”
As for Maya’s house, that was filmed in a real, residential property that the crew found in Alderley Edge in Cheshire.
Other locations included Alexandra Park in Oldham, which was used for the scenes where Joe is shot, and Castlefield Viaduct which was the setting for a chase scene.
