Quite often when I’ve found myself swayed by a late-night TikTok scroll to buy some obscure item, they tend to get used a handful of times and then get forgotten in the back of a cupboard. But there is a gadget I bought earlier this year which I have been using every day for the past six months, and it is a must have for anyone who cares a lot about their oral hygiene.

While snoozing in the video sharing app earlier this year, I came across dozens of videos about water thread. While they certainly looked impressive, I had some reservations about whether they were actually any good, if they were at all harmful to your teeth, and if they were actually worth the money.

Luckily, about a week later, I had an appointment with my dentist, so during my checkup I asked if she recommended them or not. I was happy to hear that while they “shouldn’t be used as a replacement for flossing or brushing”, they are a “good” tool worth adding to my daily routine.

Armed with the pros’ approval, I headed straight to Amazon and ordered COSLUS water floss . Normally £29.99, the device comes in three colors – black, white and green. I have the white version, and although it’s not currently on offer, the green one has been reduced to £17.99 as part of Amazon’s Big Deal Days.

The cordless water threader comes with a range of jet plugs, chargers and a 300 ml water tank, which is a lot of water to do the whole mouth at once. To get started I attached the 0.5mm ultra fine water column, filled the tank and got going. The wearable has four settings, including normal, soft, pulse and DIY, and I tend to cycle between them depending on how sensitive my gums feel, with normal being slightly more powerful than soft.

At first I thought water flossing would be a messy task, but the trick is to place the jet in your mouth and close your lips around it to ensure no water comes out. Once you turn it on, you can feel where the jet is cleaning and turn it off before removing it to spit out the water.

Although the device is quite bulky, and I sometimes struggle to turn it off quickly, it is generally very easy to use, with no need for frequent refills and 30 days of battery life, so it only needs to be charged once a month. Sometimes I even add a splash of mouthwash to the water for that extra clean feeling.

Having used it almost every day since I bought it, I can safely say it’s one of the best items I bought online this year, helping me maintain that hygienic fresh feeling between my regular check-ups. And I’m not the only one.

The flosser has received 4.2 stars from shoppersbased on more than 2,000 ratings praising its ease of use and the dentist’s recent results. One said: “I absolutely do NOT regret buying this water flosser, the battery is still working and it’s been a good few weeks, I use it every day and it’s very effective at cleaning my gums and between my teeth, my teeth and mouth feel so much cleaner after using this! Excellent product!”

Another added: I am so happy with this water thread. I have bought more expensive ones before but this model is much better made. Really does the job well. Yes it can be a bit messy but all the water threads I have used have been. Teeth feel so much cleaner after using this. Such a good price.”

One mentioned that it was a bit bulky, commenting: “I’ve found the flosser to be a little too fiddly to handle and there are design issues with the power button. The power/speed of the flosser could be a little more intense.”
