Newly released poster Mindhunter Season 3 added hype to the supposed release, though some wonder if it’s even true.

Based on the 1995 Book by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker titled Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, The Netflix series (directed by David Fincher) received critical acclaim in the 2017-2019 season.

Focusing on the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, which analyzes the minds of America’s most notorious serial killers, fans have been clamoring for the story to continue since its last episodes aired five years ago.

Is Mindhunter season 3 real or fake?

A fan-made poster is making the rounds online (primarily on Facebook) teasing what appears to be Mindhunter season 3

With a massive blood splatter in the background, the main characters of the series – Holt McCallany, Anna Torv and Jonathan Groff – are together with a new case file.

The poster, seen below, teases the alleged release on Netflix on October 11:

The poster was accompanied by the following synopsis, teasing the return of the original cast for the supposed new season.

The poster comes from a Facebook page known for promoting fake posters and trailers of hypothetical movies. Mindhunter Season 3 won’t be released anytime soon, if at all.

Will Mindhunter Season 3 ever be released?

Even considering the hype building possible Mindhunter Season 3, the probability of it happening is low at best.

A November 2019 profile of star Jonathan Groff in The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that there would be a season 3 “on hold” until creator David Fincher finished his work in the 2020s Lack of:

“Discussion of a third season of Mindhunter is on hold while Fincher focuses on his next feature.”

In January 2020, the cast was released from their contracts as Fincher moved back into feature films.

At the time, a Netflix spokesperson told TV Line that the director “can visit again Mindhunter again in the future” but the streamer didn’t want to hold back the Actors “looking for another job:”

“David is focused on directing his first Netflix movie ‘Mank’ and producing the second season of ‘Love, Death and Robots’. He may return to ‘Mindhunter’ again in the future, but in the meantime he felt it wasn’t fair to the cast to prevent them from looking for other work while he was researching his new work.”

Fincher then confirmed to Forbes that the series is over for now, commenting on how expensive it was to make and how it was “didn’t attract enough audience” during its run:

“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and in Netflix’s eyes we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify that kind of investment. I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to make ‘Mank’ the way I wanted and they gave me the opportunity to break new ground with “The Killer” It’s a blessing to work with people who can be brave when our desires are not the same, we have to be honest when we part ways.

The only sign of hope for the series’ future came from star Holt McCallany, who told Screen Rant that Fincher had ideas “five seasons of these characters” the following season 1 runs in 2017:

“You know I’m in small, you know, supporting parts, supporting parts. And that’s why it was a big deal that David brought me back to one of the main roles. Because you know I believe in his talent. , and I know he wants to do five years of this show for five seasons, so I’m hopeful, you know I don’t take anything for granted.

But so far, all signs point to it MindhunterFincher and crew move on to new endeavors.
