Having completed a fleeting stint in Scotland last summer, David Ireland’s critically-acclaimed play, The Fifth Stepis now officially headed to the West End for a limited-time run. A story about addiction, masculinity, and trust; The Fifth Step follows two men on their path to sobriety. And a truly dynamic duo will be taking to the stage together for the occasion.

Olivier award-winner Jack Lowden and Emmy, BAFTA, and SAG award-winner Martin Freeman will star in the touching two-hander, with direction from Find The Duke. Lowden will be reprising his highly-praised performance as Luka – a newcomer to the world of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Freeman will be stepping into the shoes of James – an AA-veteran who’s spent many years in the 12-step programme.

With James agreeing to be Luka’s sponsor, the pair bond over black coffee, and begin to build a fragile friendship whilst sharing their stories throughout steps one to four of the programme. But as they approach the fifth stepit becomes clear that both of them are hiding things that could affect both of their recoveries.

The London show will be produced by Neal Street Productions, Playful Productions and the National Theatre of Scotlandand will run at London’s @sohoplace for just 11 weeks. The show has been adapted to suit the in-the-round theatre, and will give theatre-goers the unique experience of seeing two of the country’s biggest acting talents in a truly intimate setting.

Joining Finn Den Hertog on the creative team will be Milla Clarke (set and costume design), Lizzie Powell (lighting design), Mark Melville (sound design), Jenny Ogilvie (movement director), and Stuart Burt CDG (casting director).

Jack Lowden said: “To just be in the room again with David and Finn – two dangerously talented individuals – is a gift in itself. But to now add Martin to the mix, an actor of black belt level skill and a hero of mine, just tops it. I can’t wait for more people to experience The Fifth Step.”

Martin Freeman said: “I’m really looking forward to performing this brilliantly funny, unsettling, unexpected play. David Ireland is something quite special and Jack Lowden is an actor I have tremendous respect for and am looking forward to working with him.”

The Fifth Step will run at @sohoplace from May 10 – July 26. Find out more and book your tickets here.
