Decor

Entering the cat cafe feels like entering a building of organized chaos (and an adorable one at that).

A kitchen on three floors and a counter on the ground floor for snacks, hot drinks and sandwiches. The focus (as it should) is on the comfort of the cats and not on us humans. We are just here to admire their beauty.

With a variety of nooks, crannies, corridors and wall stairs, Kittens can run past you and tie you up, so there’s sure to be plenty of entertainment.

Everywhere you look, there’s a cat, or, failing that, something cat-related, like an abundance of toys or quirky cat decor like a painting of a Napoleonic ragdoll or a Victorian sphinx.

The furniture is arranged in cozy little corners, designed to encourage curious cats to sit with you and slightly shy ones to hide from the commotion. It’s a nice little place for everyone involved.

The main event

After sitting on the couch on the second floor where most of the cats lived, we browsed the one page menu. A simple list of objects that do the job; paninis, bagels, scones, cookies, etc. Certainly enough to get you by, but let’s be honest… you’re not really here for the food, are you?

Unlike a typical coffee shop, this one operates on an entry fee where you pay for every 15 minutes of your stay. We paid for an hour which was £15. However, once you have paid your entry, you can enjoy unlimited hot and cold drinks from the menu. The only extras you pay for during your stay are your food and cat treats.

We each ordered a panini (tuna melt for me, ham and cheese for Lowri) and two cups of Chai latte. While we waited for their arrival, we watched the younger cats jump around, playing with each other, while the older residents opted for nap time.

Our drink came served in a wide-mouthed teacup topped with a lovely paw print-shaped sprinkle of cocoa powder. Just the right temperature and amount of spice, these Chai lattes were just what we needed to warm us up on a humid and gloomy afternoon.

Shortly after our paninis arrived, with a handful of pre-made salted chips on the side, the sweet touch made the experience even more homey, like being in someone’s front room. The tuna melt panini was a generous size with plenty of melted cheese to hold the edges of the bread together, while the ham and cheese was made thick with sliced ham and plenty of it. All in all, a decent place for lunch.

Doomsday

Liverpool Cat Cafe is a cat lover’s paradise, and the four-legged friends you meet here are all well-groomed and cared for. It’s a great place for young cat fanatics celebrating birthdays and older ailurophiles (aka “cat lovers” to you and me) who want to quietly bask with the almighty mouse.

Grab a cuppa, find a comfortable armchair and lower your blood pressure a notch or two.
