Fans of Chevy Chase were left disgruntled on Sunday night after a rare stage appearance from the comedian was blighted by sound issues and stilted interviewing from broadcaster Mike Read.

People attending the one-off Hammersmith Eventim Apollo  gig shared their ire on Twitter, complaining that Read appeared ignorant of Chase’s career and ended the evening abruptly by walking off-stage.

While there were sound issues during the beginning of the An Audience With evening, when Read and Chase were properly mic-ed up, the rapport between the two men barely improved.

Read earned unfortunate comparisons to Alan Partridge after asking Chase about tennis and about what football team the latter supported, despite never having shown any interest in the sports.

Moving onto Chase’s career – which has seen him star in the Fletch and Vacation movies and found Saturday Night Live – Read produced a guitar and forced Chase to sing along to an old song he no longer remembered the words to.

When Read asked what Chase’s favourite Monty Python catchphrase was, an audience member received support for heckling, saying, “Mike Read, you’re a t—“.

The evening was documented by audience members on Twitter, some of whom demanded that the Apollo issue ticket refunds or an apology to Chase for Read’s efforts.
