Timon of Athens is one of Shakespeare’s least frequently performed plays, but over the past few years its cynical assessment of money and the corrosive effect it can have on humanity has gained a sobering resonance.
Ben Lawrence witnesses a rehearsal of Act II, Scene II, in which the repercussions of Timon’s limitless bounty start to take effect. He then talks to Hunter, the first professional actress to ever star in this role, about the gender swap, what drives Timon’s generosity, and how she takes on the challenge of a character who swiftly descends into bitterness and misanthropy.
Timon of Athens is playing at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, from December 7 until February 22. Tickets: rsc.org.uk
