What British person doesn’t like Fish and Chips? They are synonymous with British cuisine and everyone can find a local chippy on their motorway.
According to the National Federation of Fish Fryers, the UK fish and chip industry generates a turnover of around £1.2 billion each year, with 10 per cent of the UK’s potato crop and 30 per cent of all white fish sold in the UK being used in these businesses.
There are around 10,500 Fish & Chip shops in the UK and the best fish and chip shops in the country have been honored at The National Fish & Chip Awards 2024. Unfortunately for us in the capital, the nearest award-winning chippy is three hours away.
The winner of restaurant of the year was Knights Fish Restaurant, located in Glastonbury, Somerset. The town, which is synonymous with its annual music festival, also has an award-winning chippy.
The restaurant has been around since 1895 and has been family owned since 1909. They were in the top 20 fish & chip restaurants in 2019 and then broke into the top 10 in 2020. This was repeated once more in 2022 and 2023, but now they have taken the top prize.
Unfortunately, it would take you just under three hours by car to get to Knight’s Fish Restaurant, so it’s a good distance away. Noah’s in Bristol came third and is closer than Knights. It can be reached in about two hours and 10 minutes on a good day by car.
The other Mobile Operator of the Year award was Jojo’s Fish and Chips in Stafford, Staffordshire. You can get to this mobile chippy in two hours and 30 minutes by car. They came second in 2023 and upgraded it to first in 2024.
