An independent Caribbean restaurant on London’s South Bank is celebrating Black History Month with a special bowl of food. Along with the lunch, you will also receive a fact sheet about Caribbean culture and traditions so you can learn more about the flavors you try.
LIMIN Southbank is located right in the heart of Southbank, at Gabriel’s Wharf very close to London landmarks such as the London Eye and Tate Modern. It is owned by Chef Sham Mahabir who is passionate about his Caribbean heritage and uses LIMIN as a platform to promote cultural understanding.
October 2024 is Black History Month again and the theme this year is Reclaiming Narratives. The idea behind this theme is, as the Black History Month website says, “a significant shift toward acknowledging and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.”
LIMIN Southbank has posted on its own website 15 ideas on how to celebrate Black History Month in the workplace and one is by eating at Black-owned restaurants. They are of course promoting their own offering which comes with a choice.
The LIMIN BHM bowl meal costs £14.99 per person and includes your choice of Shredded Jerk Chicken, BBQ chicken or spiced Jackfruit for vegans/vegetarians. You have coconut and thyme rice and peas, fried plantains, mango and citrus slaw and mac and cheese with a drink.
The menu is a celebration of the diverse influences of Caribbean cuisine, drawing from the indigenous Taino people, European colonizers, African enslaved people and Indian indentured laborers. Each order also comes with a fact sheet about Caribbean culture and traditions that gives a sense of understanding of the food you are eating.
You can find LIMIN Southbank at Gabriel’s Wharf, 56 Upper Ground, London SE1 9PP
